Grammarly Review 2020: Pros, Cons, and Prices

Grammarly’s algorithms flag potential issues in the text and make context-specific suggestions to help with grammar, spelling and usage, wordiness, style, punctuation, and even plagiarism. Our software explains the reasoning behind each suggestion, so you can make an informed decision about whether, and how, to correct an issue. Overall, Grammarly does find enough real issues in my writing that it is worth the time it takes. One major problem I’ve encountered is that Grammarly does not play well with large Word documents.

Even the most experienced writers make mistakes, especially when fatigue kicks in. Correcting them can cost a lot of time, energy, and nerves. It’s important to have useful software by side, as it makes the writing better and the whole process much enjoyable. As per me, Grammarly is one of the best tools for proofreading available.

Update

Grammarly now has Google docs support and launched their much-awaited mobile apps (for Android & IOS). Click here to know more about downloading them.

What is Grammarly?

Grammarly is a proofreading and writing tool that detects errors in writing. This relates not just to errors in punctuation, but also syntactical and other grammatical errors. With every error detected, see the guidelines on how to fix it.

One of the top features that impressed me is that Grammarly robustly checks the spelling and subsequently compares the text to web results for plagiarism. There is also editing help involved, in the form of advice about the writing style.

How can we use it?

One important benefit of Grammarly is that it’s easy to use. As we all know that nobody wants a tool that requires a lot of effort to master. So, you can initiate, by clicking a few times on it to finish the process. Next, choose the device and OS that you wish to install Grammarly on that’s about it.

By working seamlessly in the background, I found that it scans words as we write and detects mistakes. It’s great for use for any writing endeavors, as it doesn’t clog up the text box with toolbars or button.

The only way to notice Grammarly is by the “tick” or “X” in the bottom right corner of the box. Once everything is properly filled, a green tick will appear. In cases where there is a mistake, the fixed part will be underlined in red, with a red “X” in the bottom of a text box.

In addition to these mistakes, I came across that Grammarly has a unique feature of showing an explanation to the mistake. Every error is categorized by its nature (grammatical, stylistic, spelling) and elaborated briefly. To do so, follow three-step process given below:

  • Save the error in the own database and ignore it
  • Correct it
  • Correct with just one click.

Only the aforementioned features are available with the Free version. The Premium package includes vocabulary improvement suggestions, genre-specific advice, and plagiarism features.

Both versions include the option to create a personal database of words and expressions. I felt that this is great if a niche is ever-developing with new terms that can be saved. Definitions of words are also available, in case the user is not sure about placing it in a certain context.

Overview of features:

  • Spell-checking and proofreading for both single words, word cases, and whole sentences
  • Update a personal dictionary
  • Advice for specific styles and text/blog/articles types
  • It has an automatic plagiarism detector that compares work with millions of pages on the whole web
  • Native apps for both Windows and MacOS
  • Apps for Android and iOS
  • Applicable to any text box, whether it’s in an app
  • Microsoft Office integration
  • Browser extensions for Firefox, Chrome, Edge, and Safari

How does it compare to Microsoft Word?

Ever since Grammarly’s release in 2009, there has been a lot of comparisons with Microsoft Word. This is particularly related to the native apps for Windows and MacOS. How can we compare, and which one should be used? Why? Let’s take a look.

Microsoft Word is cheaper but can only be bought as a part of Microsoft’s three Office packages – Office 365 Home, Office 365 Personal, Office Home & Student 2019. The deal is even better on getting to know about the additional programs such as PowerPoint and Excel.

On comparing the features, Grammarly has a unique set of some better features. Blog writers and content writers need to write strictly original content, so the plagiarism tool makes their life much easier. The style-specific suggestions are useful for professional writers. It can make accommodation of work to the audience much easier. The app interface is also smoother.

One other advantage Word has is the one-time purchase. Grammarly’s longest package duration is one year, with a once-per-annum payment.

Grammarly Review

Samantha Barry,‘s conclusion

Overall, I claim that Grammarly is a useful tool that can elevate the work of any professional writer. Even the free version is useful for anyone who writers, but it’s the Premium feature that makes it completely worth it. It saves a lot of time by automating proofreading and checking the authenticity of the text. With the style-related suggestions, it starts all a writer needs in one single package.
